Quick Firefox update on its way to fix saved credentials access issues

A bug, found in yesterday’s Firefox 3.0.2 update, that prevents access to saved passwords that include international characters either in the web address the password is saved for, the login, or the password itself, has prompted planning for a quick Firefox update.

Mike Beltzner, Firefox lead, explains in a post to the mozilla.dev.planning group:

The symptom is that users who have password data stores with non-ASCII data saved as something other than UTF-8 (more common for people who have saved passwords on IDN domains or non en-US domains) will not be able to access their saved passwords or create any new saved passwords. There is no permanent dataloss, the saved data is just inaccessible. While this doesn’t affect all Firefox users, it is a significant regression and has triggered a fast-release Firefox 3.0.3 which will contain a single fix for this issue.

A fix is ready, and as soons as QA gives the go ahead, it will be available as Firefox 3.0.3 for users to update, most likely, some time next week.

As of October 1st, 2008 The Cleaner Free Edition will not be supported. It is now a 15-day demo.

This is mostly a servicing release to make some small improvements and to fix a few important bugs.

List of changes:

    * Improved: Effect rendering should be a little faster now.
    * Changed: Implemented some changes to the "Add Noise" effect that were suggested by a forum member.
    * Changed: The canvas background color is now always #c0c0c0.
    * Changed: The auto-updater should now correctly detect .NET 3.5 and newer, which will help to save bandwidth when Paint.NET v4.0 is released (it will require .NET 3.5).
    * Fixed: Paint.NET now works on a system that has the .NET 3.5 SP1 "Client Profile" installed.
    * Fixed: When zoomed in and the cursor is to the top-left of the image (negative coordinates), the ruler is now highlighted in the correct area. Fixed: The effect rendering system no longer sets the "Tag" property on the configuration dialog.
    * Fixed: Some incorrectly authored plugins would cause a crash when loading their support details (author, copyright, etc.).
    * Fixed: There was a bug in the color wheel for IndirectUI that caused it to show the wrong values at initialization.
    * Fixed: There was a performance problem for effects that used the IndirectUI color wheel control.
    * Fixed: In some rare cases, Paint.NET would crash while shutting down.
    * Fixed: When using the "Fixed Ratio" feature of the Rectangle Selection tool, it would crash if 0 was specified for both the width and height.

ESET NOD32 Antivirus v3.0.667 has been released in English, Slovak, Czech, Polish, Russian, Hungarian, Croatian and German. Other language versions will follow shortly. This release contains the following main changes:

- improved reinstallation / upgrade process

Even though reinstallation over an older version is fully supported, those who have been experiencing issues may want to uninstall the current version first and install the new one from scratch.

In the case of any persisting problems, try deleting the "C:\Documents and Settings\All Users\Application Data\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus" folder (on Vista it's "C:\Users\All Users\Application Data\ESET\ESET NOD32 Antivirus") after uninstalling the previous version and prior to installing the new one.
